What is a QR Code?
A Quick Response Code or a QR Code is a 2D barcode
that can store a lot more information than a conventional 1D barcode. This
information can easily be read using a QR Code Scanner application on a
smartphone.
Why use a QR Code?
A QR Code combined with mobile internet on a smartphone
becomes a powerful tool in connecting print (offline media) to online media. E.g., if the
information stored in the code is a web URL, users who scan the code will
directly view the webpage on their smartphones. In the developed world,
businesses are increasingly using these codes in their marketing content to
allow customers to easily access online content or important information.
Marketers are usually constrained for space in print media and deploying QR
codes allow them to provide unlimited information to their customers. It is
also possible for advertisers to engage with their customer as well as assess
the impact of their campaign.
What are the
innovative applications of QR Codes?
QR Codes open up infinite possibilities for marketers to
provide consumers with access to their content. A few innovative applications are listed
below:
- Access to Content Online: Have limited ad-space in a Daily? Add a QR code and allow interested customers to visit the website for more information, a video tutorial, tech specifications, or even to place on order online
- Get Directions on Google Maps: Handing out wedding invitations? Add a QR code of the venue and your guests can get the directions directly on the Google Maps Application on their smartphones
- Engage Customers with A Survey/Feedback: Do you value your customers feedback? Put up a QR code and let your customers fill out the survey form which appears on their smartphone. You will have to reward them with a discount or at least a cookie!
Even without access to mobile internet, QR Codes have many
applications:
- Vcard: Add a QR code on your business card and those who scan it can save your contact details in less than 2 seconds
- Pre-loaded SMS: Is your business running a promotion? Do your customers need to SMS a long code to a designated number? Just place a QR code on your standees and a pre-loaded SMS will be generated on your customers smartphone screens and all they have to do is push the send button
- Access to Wi-fi: Your customers having trouble accessing the wi-fi in your Café? Lengthy user ids and passwords? Scanning a QR Code will provide them with instant access to the internet. The id and password will directly be saved in their network settings
- Calendar Entry: Hosting an event and want guests to be there? Remind them by putting up a QR code on the invitations. An event will directly be added to the calendar application of the guests who scan the code
What is the
difference between Static and Dynamic QR Codes?
Static QR Codes can hold information that cannot be altered.
In Dynamic QR Codes, the information (web URL only) can be edited or replaced
without the requirement to change the code. Customers will be able to view a
new webpage without businesses having to reprint a new code.
